Jason Smolanoff

Jason Smolanoff is a globally recognized expert in federal law enforcement, cybersecurity, complex digital investigations and expert witness services, with more than two decades of experience at the forefront of the field.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Smolanoff was the global practice leader for cyber risk at a leading consulting firm, responsible for the profit and loss, go-to-market strategy, mergers and acquisitions and overall strategic vision for the business unit with the goal of helping clients manage the full lifecycle of cyber threats. In this role, he oversaw a broad spectrum of services, ranging from proactive cyber strategy and risk consulting to managed services, incident response, crisis communications and post-incident notification.

Mr. Smolanoff’s distinguished career includes twelve years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”), where he served as Supervisory Special Agent for a Cyber National Security Squad and for an embedded FBI squad on the United States Secret Service’s Electronic Crimes Task Force. In these roles, he managed complex cyber national security investigations related to counterintelligence and counterterrorism matters and also complex cyber organized crime matters, respectively. Mr. Smolanoff served in Afghanistan as a lead mentor for the Organized Crime Unit at the Major Crimes Task Force, collaborating with international intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

Mr. Smolanoff’s work at the FBI garnered national recognition, notably for his role as the primary case agent for “Operation Summer Solstice” and “Operation Phish Phry,” two undercover operations which, at the time, resulted in the largest counterfeit software and the largest computer intrusion prosecutions in U.S. history. For his exceptional contributions, Mr. Smolanoff was honored with the 56th and 58th Attorney General’s Awards for Distinguished Service and Excellence in Law Enforcement from the Department of Justice. Additionally, Mr. Smolanoff was awarded the National Counterintelligence Award for Outstanding Cyber Investigation by the Office of the Director of National Counterintelligence and has earned the Joint Duty Certification for Significant Contributions to the United States Intelligence Community.

Mr. Smolanoff’s foundation is built on deep technical expertise, rooted in his early career as a physical chemist. Before entering law enforcement, he was employed by a major semiconductor equipment manufacturer, where he specialized in facilitating the manufacturing of cutting-edge computer chip technology for global clients. His innovative contributions in this field earned him two U.S. patents and multiple published peer reviewed scientific articles.
