Stefan Van Thienen

Stefan Van Thienen has more than 30 years of experience in business and operations performance improvement in the petrochemical industry. Stefan leads and has led several large-scale turnaround and transformation programs.

Stefan combines his experience as a business executive of chemical sites, plants and supply chains with his background as a global client leader and performance improvement consultant for the petrochemical industry. He has a strong focus on core business functions in engineering and asset management, manufacturing and supply chain excellence and the digital, climate neutrality and circularity transformation of the petrochemical value chain.

Stefan’s work involves programs to restructure operating models, improve cost, deliver post-merger integration synergies and carve-outs, redesign supply chains and develop growth strategies for businesses in oil, gas and chemicals, and the broader “process industries” (including paper and packaging, metal and steel, converting and compounding and building and construction materials).

Stefan is a regular speaker on chemical sector topics and an organizer of chemical think tanks, and has worked for companies such as BASF, Covestro, Borealis, Akzo Nobel, ExxonMobil, Lanxess and TotalEnergies, as well as for multiple European chemical sector associations. Prior to joining FTI Consulting in 2024, Stefan worked as a partner and global client leader at Deloitte.

Stefan’s line management experience in the chemical sector entailed various positions in the area of business, operations and plant/site management with Bayer (now Lanxess) in rubber chemicals. Stefan’s flagship experience in the chemical sector involved spearheading the design, construction, start-up and management of a precipitated silica business for JM Huber Corporation.
