About Tim
Tim Sherman is a Managing Director in FTI Consulting’s SEC & Accounting Advisory practice, based in Los Angeles. Mr. Sherman has more than 20 years of experience assisting clients with matters involving complex accounting, finance and audit issues. He has advised clients on issues related to revenue recognition, expense recognition and asset valuation (including impairment).
Mr. Sherman’s engagement experience includes assisting companies in drafting financial statements and disclosures (including restatements), creating and memorializing accounting policies and procedures and determining the proper accounting treatment for complex transactions under GAAP. He also advises clients on navigating the audit process.
Mr. Sherman has advised clients preparing restated financial statements and first-time GAAP financial statements. He has also provided consulting services related to revenue recognition, expense recognition and inventory valuation in industries such as aerospace, entertainment, private equity and construction. Mr. Sherman has drafted numerous reports and memos detailing the proper accounting treatment for complex transactions.
Mr. Sherman has testified as an expert witness regarding proper accounting policies and procedures as well as economic damages. He also has experience with a wide range of litigation matters including cases involving auditor malpractice, white collar defense, patent infringement, antitrust, breach of contract and fraud allegations. Mr. Sherman has investigated compliance with royalty agreements and created models to calculate the underpayment of royalties. He has calculated cost overruns incurred by construction projects and damages related to construction delays.
In addition to his client service work, Mr. Sherman served as Chair of the California Society of CPAs’ Fraud and Financial Investigations section. He is Co-Chair and a lecturer for the Practicing Law Institute’s annual Basics of Accounting for Lawyers Program in San Francisco. He has also been a guest lecturer at the University of California, Irvine School of Law, California State University, Long Beach’s M.S. in Accounting program and University of California, Riverside’s M.S. in Accounting program. Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Sherman worked as a forensic accountant at a Big Four accounting firm and an international consulting firm. He has conducted investigations related to financial statement fraud, asset misappropriation and compliance with royalty contracts. His assignments have taken him around the world, including Bangalore, Tel Aviv, Hong Kong and Helsinki.
