FTI Consulting was retained to investigate the financial operations of a hybrid cryptocurrency platform. The investigation involved identifying the sources and uses of funds across many bank accounts, cryptocurrency platforms and crypto self-custody wallets over a multiyear period. Our experts were enlisted to provide critical transparency and insights into the historical financial operations and flow of funds of the company.
Our Impact
- FTI Consulting attributed 98% of all funds,1 and further identified a $1 million variance due to currency translation impacts, despite incomplete internal company records and on-chain challenges around attributing the cryptocurrency addresses.
- By collecting a wide variety of company data and documents in addition to blockchain data, the team was able to identify and reconcile discrepancies in the client’s financial records, effectively reducing potential regulatory liabilities and enhancing the client’s overall compliance efforts.
- Our experts’ strategic insights and recommendations equipped counsel and the client with the information needed to strengthen their case.
Our Role
- FTI Consulting conducted a comprehensive flow-of-funds analysis across many traditional and cryptocurrency accounts, covering a multiyear period.
- The team deployed a robust data collection process, gathering a wide range of company records that included invoices, emails, text messages and system logs. By leveraging a document review platform, the team systematically cross-referenced dates, timestamps, amounts and wallet addresses from blockchain tracing work with existing company documentation.
- Our cryptocurrency experts analyzed the underlying token contract as well as trading activity for the company’s created token, identifying transfer patterns and effectively mapping out all on-chain and exchange activity.
