Girls Who Code (“GWC”), a nonprofit that partners with schools, community centers and other nonprofits to close the gender gap in tech, sought to centralize its reporting for key strategic and operational KPIs across multiple teams and data systems. GWC engaged FTI Consulting to develop a dynamic Tableau dashboard aligned with their recently developed 5x5 strategic plan and consolidate reporting metrics across teams and data systems.
Our Impact
- FTI Consulting delivered GWC’s first dynamic Tableau-based scorecard that visualizes the organization’s programming, finance, internal business and learning and innovation pillars.
- Each focus area summarized organizational performance, capturing a variety of metrics including reach and engagement across clubs, fundraising performance and donor analysis, program costs per student served, employee satisfaction and program survey feedback results.
- GWC leadership can track strategic and operational progress against targets and access critical metrics in a centralized location, facilitating data-driven decision making.
- We established data ownership and governance protocols by identifying business and technical owners and facilitating knowledge transfer meetings. The dashboards will be used for executive updates, including with the Board, and will support decisions on where GWC should invest time and resources.
Our Role
- FTI Consulting conducted interviews with key stakeholders from across the organization, including finance, programming, operations and data and analytics, to identify and prioritize the data indicators GWC was most interested in tracking. This included capturing the data sources for each metric and assessing the value to the organization.
- Additionally, we developed an interactive and comprehensive dashboard to measure performance in Tableau, connecting to multiple internal databases across GWC’s data infrastructure. Our team reviewed the data for overall consistency and quality to ensure the reporting was accurate and could be tracked in an ongoing, repeatable way.
- Our experts outlined a phased roadmap for adding additional metrics to the dashboard over time, with clear timelines for data collection and integration into the existing Tableau tool.
- We created detailed documentation of all metrics, including data sources, respective data owners and update procedures to ensure sustainable dashboard maintenance over time.
“Our partnership with FTI Consulting has enabled us to sharpen our focus on the strategic and operational metrics that define our success as an organization. The balanced scorecard equips me, our executive leadership team, and our board with a clear framework to identify priorities, measure progress, and take timely action. It will be an essential management tool for driving alignment, efficiency, and accountability across the organization.”
