Mr. Steinberg has more than 25 years of U.S. federal, state and local tax and international tax expertise. He has extensive experience providing a broad array of tax advisory services to companies in a wide range of markets and industries.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Steinberg was Head of the Global Tax Counsel and Planning group at Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc., responsible for addressing a broad assortment of complex tax issues arising from its Chapter 11 U.S. bankruptcy administration. In this regard, he was primarily responsible for providing tax advisory services, including the efficient utilization of Lehman’s tax attributes, for the unwinding of Lehman’s brokerage services, capital markets and derivative transactions, investment management and real estate businesses.
Most notably, Mr. Steinberg was responsible for the tax planning in several notable, post-bankruptcy divestitures, including Neuberger Berman; Archstone, the formerly publicly-traded REIT previously acquired by Lehman in 2007; and the sale of R3 Capital Partners, a Lehman private equity platform established pre-bankruptcy, to Blackrock.
Prior to Lehman’s bankruptcy filing, Mr. Steinberg was responsible for and involved in all aspects of the company’s global tax planning, U.S. tax treaty analysis, general tax audit and controversy support, and tax planning for strategic proprietary investments, including in several prominent alternative energy projects.
Before working at Lehman, Mr. Steinberg worked at Merrill Lynch & Co. as a Senior Tax Attorney, based both in New York and London, where he was responsible for providing tax advisory and planning services in addition to supporting the business units and Corporate Finance division (Treasury, Regulatory Capital, Legal, Financial Accounting and Accounting Policy). Federal, state and local, U.S. international tax along with tax advisory services for financial product/capital market units were among his areas of focus.
Mr. Steinberg started his career at Deloitte Tax, based in New York, as a member of the firm’s Private Equity/Investment Management group, performing tax advisory services, tax return preparation and tax return review engagements for clients such as KKR, Dreman Value Fund and Timber Hill (now owned by Interactive Brokers).
