Gary Long is a Managing Director in the Business Transformation practice and specializes in operations and revenue growth. Mr. Long’s expertise includes strategic sourcing, procurement, logistics and sales and operations planning. He brings over 30 years of broad supply chain experience in senior positions across both industry and management consulting.
Mr. Long’s career has spanned numerous industries, including consumer packaged goods, diversified industrials, automotive, pharmaceuticals, telecom and mining, among others. In regards to strategic sourcing, Mr. Long led a strategic sourcing effort for a major retailer with over 4,000 stores, covering a variety of indirect categories and resulting in more than $20 million in savings. He also achieved $70 million in cost savings for a French global industrial conglomerate with the development and implementation of a strategic sourcing program, where he designed and integrated a category management organization structure.
Procurement engagements Mr. Long has advised include performing an assessment of the procurement function, identifying process and organizational capability gaps compared with best practices, as well as a supporting the business case and implementation plan for a major precious metals mining company.
Mr. Long’s logistics experience includes launching a logistics management project for a food manufacturing company, where $48-$64 million in cost savings were captured by assessing logistics management processes and systems and orchestrating a new delivery strategy for direct store delivery.
In regards to performance improvement, Mr. Long strengthened the performance and competitiveness of a diesel locomotive manufacturer by recommending an optimal plant layout, labor deployment plans and a materials requirements plan to support productive volume forecasts and model mix. He also developed a make vs. buy model for evaluating producer departments against outside suppliers. Additionally, Mr. Long worked with a paper manufacturing company to reduce annual costs by $10 million while improving service levels by 5% by streamlining order entry, processing and fulfillment.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Long was a Director in the Global Procurement at Teva Pharmaceuticals, as well as a Director at KPMG, a Partner at Accenture and a Principal at A.T. Kearney.
Mr. Long holds a B.S. in Biology from Fairfield University and an M.B.A. in Business Administration and Management from the University of New Haven. He completed the Effective Management of Production Operations program at The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and is a member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
