FTI Consulting Extends Partnership with Google News Initiative to Launch Asia Pacific Subscriptions Lab
Washington, D.C., Sept. 22, 2020 — FTI Consulting, Inc. (NYSE: FCN) today announced the launch of the GNI APAC Subscriptions Lab, a four-month program in partnership with the Google News Initiative (“GNI”) and the World Association of News Publishers (“WAN-IFRA”) to help eight different news publishers from the Asia Pacific region strengthen digital subscriptions capabilities and grow reader revenue.
The Subscriptions Lab draws on FTI Consulting’s expertise in helping global news publishers develop successful digital subscription businesses. The program originally was launched in March 2019 in partnership with GNI and the Local Media Association and featured a diverse group of publishers from small, medium and large newspapers across North America.
“The ongoing Subscriptions Lab partnership with the GNI aligns with FTI Consulting’s goal of supporting news publishers globally with digital transformation” said Ken Harding, Senior Managing Director and Global Publishing + Digital Media practice leader.
FTI Consulting’s efforts will be led by Managing Directors Peter Doucette and Justin Eisenband from the Publishing + Digital Media practice along with Asia Pacific regional Technology, Media and Telecom experts Sam Evans and Vincent Stevens of Delta Partners, which joined FTI Consulting in July. Mr. Doucette was previously Chief Consumer Revenue Officer at The Boston Globe and helped develop that newspaper’s paid subscription model and dual-website strategy.
“After a successful rollout in North America, we are excited to expand the GNI Subscriptions Lab to the Asia Pacific region,” Mr. Doucette said. “This partnership will allow news organizations of varying sizes and audiences the chance to learn from each other and develop a strong digital subscription model that could potentially be the foundation for the entire industry.”
The goal of the program is to develop a strong, long-lasting digital subscriptions business for participating news organizations. It will include modules on building loyal paying relationships with readers, optimizing the engagement and subscription funnel, and embracing a reader-first strategy and culture.
The publishers participating in the GNI APAC Subscriptions Lab are BloombergQuint, Business Insider Japan, CommonWealth Magazine, The Hindu, The Jakarta Post, Kompas.id, Malaysiakini and Southeast Asia Globe. In addition to FTI Consulting’s expertise, the publishers will have support from Google teams that bring experience in data, technology, product, subscriptions and more, as well as access to WAN-IFRA’s extensive network of member news publishers across Asia Pacific.
The publishers were selected via an online application process, with the goal of representing a diverse cross-section of print and digital news organizations across the region.
