About Giorgio
Giorgio Cioni has more than 25 years of experience in defence policy, investment and inter-agency coordination through his career at NATO as Director of Armament and Aerospace Capabilities.
Mr. Cioni led policy and capability developments across land, maritime, air and space domains. He played a strategic role in numerous defence programmes, including on Command and Control, Air and Missile Defence and Joint Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (‘JISR’), as well as in several multidomain capability projects which embrace emerging and disruptive technologies and uncrewed systems.
Mr. Cioni served as chair of some major NATO senior policy committees, including the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Policy Committee and the Aviation Committee, acting as NATO’s primary interface with international aviation and aerospace organisations
Mr. Cioni supports FTI Consulting’s work in the aerospace and defence sectors, advising on strategy implementation, government contracts, procurement and regulatory requirements issues. He also brings deep expertise in European Union and partner country aerospace and defence institutions, as well as transatlantic defence and technology bodies and companies.
Relevant Experience:
- Led the review of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence Policy, defining the scope, objectives, architecture and capabilities required for the defence against any air threats
- Led the process for the definition and development of the successor capability of NATO Early Warning & Control Force (from the Airborne Warning and Control System (‘AWACS’) to the Alliance Federated Surveillance and Control (‘AFSC’)
- Steered the conceptual development and launched the program for the delivery of the cloud-based, modular and federated NATO Air C2 capability
- Led the establishment of the Alliance Persistent Surveillance from Space (‘APSS’) initiative for the provision of commercial space imagery and data to NATO military commands as JISR Capability Area Manager
- Provided strategic leadership in the design, development and execution of projects and operational experimentations for the integration of crewed and uncrewed assets in a multidomain environment, including JISR Unified Vision and maritime REPMUS
