Challenges and Opportunities for Mobile Network Operators

The fixed mobile convergence (“FMC”) landscape in key ASEAN markets is presenting compelling opportunities for mobile network operators (“MNOs”), especially challengers. In Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines fixed broadband (“FBB”) and paid content are growing faster than mobile, with higher subscriber and revenue trends. Consumer insights show that 40 percent of non‑FBB users are likely to subscribe within one year, 54 percent cite increasing internet needs, and 50 percent feel current pay TV is poor value. Importantly, 90 percent are open to bundling FBB with their mobile provider and 76 percent are open to bundling pay TV with their telco, provided the FBB experience is credible.
Our analysis shows that MNOs must first establish credibility through competitive FBB speeds and reliability to capitalize on bundling opportunities. Our team has studied these dynamics and can support operators in sizing the market, benchmarking competitors, shaping bundled propositions, crafting go-to-market strategies and operating models, and guiding implementation to ensure success in FBB and paid content ventures.
