Optimising Labour Planning and Cost for a European Airline

Following a companywide transformation, a European airline faced key crew planning challenges across people, processes and systems, hindering its organisational effectiveness. FTI Consulting was engaged to provide Collective Bargaining Agreement (‘CBA’) negotiation and labour strategy support to ensure the client met transformation and cost-saving targets.

Our Impact:
  • FTI Consulting’s negotiation support led to a successful long-term multinational CBA that resulted in approximately 20% annual savings and enabled the client’s growth strategy.
  • The client achieved a comprehensive crew planning process remodel comprised of information flows and feedback loops that allow for greater clarity, accountability and informed decision-making throughout the entire process.
  • The redesigned operating model included organisational structure recommendations aimed at streamlining decision-making and aligning responsibilities, supported by KPIs that enable a data- and performance-driven culture.

Our Role:

  • FTI Consulting assisted the negotiating committee by assessing the risk of various negotiation strategies and providing analytical and strategic support with valuing, assessing and prioritising compensation and productivity-related proposals.
  • Our business transformation experts conducted a current-state assessment of the existing long-term and short-term crew planning processes, manpower planning systems and KPIs.
  • The team addressed pain points in the existing process and designed key information flows, critical handover points and feedback loops to reduce operational bottlenecks and increase continuous improvement.
  • FTI Consulting delivered and supported the implementation of structural enhancements aimed at improving productivity, streamlining decision-making and enabling sustainable growth.
